About Me

I have owned an SLR camera for over 15 years, although it's only in the past few years that I have made a serious attempt to learn how to use it properly.

My first camera was a Minolta Dynax 500si, a film camera for those not familiar with these things. I was working in Switzerland during the summer and found that my little point and press camera couldn't really do justice to the Swiss Alps. My parents were asking what I would like for a 21st birthday present and so I got my first SLR.

I hope to revisit the film images taken over more than 10 years with that camera, and scan some of the negatives for display here, if I can find them.

A few years ago I finally went digital and bought a Nikon D70s. Most of the pictures you see on this site were taken with that camera, or with the D300 I later replaced it with. Whilst film still has some advantages over digital, for me the convenience of digital is a clear winner. Being able to "change films" midway, review the shot instantly and edit the image on my own computer (even on a laptop out in the field) outweigh any benefits I gain from film.

In 2007 I decided to make a conscious effort to really get to grips with the camera. To that end I booked myself on some photography workshops. In the company of professionals, small groups of amateurs like me are helped to find the opportunities for a good picture and then given technical and artistic assistance to realise it. You will see the results of these courses in the gallery pages, as well as my own pictures.

I've added a few links to websites that I have found helpful or interesting and there is a contact page if you'd like to drop me a line about anything.

I hope you enjoy my pictures.
